Living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, small changes in your daily routine can have a big impact on your overall wellbeing. In this post, we share 10 simple ways to improve your overall health and well-being:
1. Prioritise sleep
Sleep is crucial for good health as it not only increases energy levels but also helps to improve memory, attention, and concentration. Aim for 8 hours of quality sleep each night by trying to establish a bedtime routine, create a comfortable sleep environment and, avoid caffeine and electronic devices before bed.
2. Drink enough water
Water is essential for our bodies to function properly as it helps maintain hydration, relieve fatigue and improve heart, brain and muscle performance. Necessary water intake amounts vary from person to person and from day to day (water increase should increase in hot weather or when exercising) but try sipping water gradually throughout the day.
3. Eat a balanced diet
Eating a healthy and balanced diet can improve energy levels, mood and overall health. Focus on eating a variety of whole, nutrient-dense foods including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats.
4. Move your body
Exercise is important for both physical and mental health. Current guidelines recommend aiming for at least 30 minutes of exercise each day which could include walking, cycling, swimming, or coming into Pivotal for a session of Pilates!
5. Practice mindfulness
Mindfulness can reduce stress and improve mental wellbeing. Try incorporating mindfulness practices into your day such as meditation, deep breathing or yoga. Many audio streaming platforms now give you access to guided meditations or mindfulness podcasts, which is a great place to start your mindfulness practice.
6. Connect with others
Social connection is important for our mental health. Humans are designed to be social so, make time to catch up with friends and family, or find other ways of increasing your social circle by joining local community groups or volunteering.
7. Reduce stress
Stress is known to have negative effects on our health. Try to identify your sources of stress and find ways to manage it, which could include exercise, mindfulness practice or speaking with a therapist.
8. Practice gratitude
Gratitude can improve our overall wellbeing and happiness. Each day, try writing down three things you are grateful for – it can do wonders for your mental health!
9. Get outdoors
Spending time in nature can reduce stress, improve mood, and boost immunity. Sunlight also has links with better bone health as it a natural and easy way to increase Vitamin D levels to help your body maintain calcium and prevent brittle bones. Try to spend some time outside each day even if its just a short walk around the block.
10. Take care of your mental health
Mental health is just as important as physical health. Don’t be afraid to seek help if you are struggling with mental health issues, Talk to a therapist, join a support group or, seek out other resources in your community.
