Why you need physio post-mastectomy

A mastectomy is more than just a surgical procedure. Not simply because it tends to be involved with managing, or the risk of, cancer; it’s understandably a highly emotional experience for a woman to lose a breast for so many reasons.

The surgery itself is carried out under a general anesthetic and may include an artificial breast reconstruction. Due to the invasive nature of the procedure, post-operative physiotherapy is a great way to work on reducing any pain and discomfort while you heal.

After surgery, many patients experience pain and tenderness, as well as reduced range of motion, stiffness, and weakness in the area. It is also common to experience various conditions of the lymphatic system, particularly if there was removal of or disruption to any lymph nodes during surgery. We frequently help women to manage lymphoedema (swelling of the arm) and cording (hardening of lymph vessels).

While treatment is of course tailored to each individual, some of the techniques we use to treat include massage and gentle stretching of the area; lymphatic drainage techniques, compression garments, range of movement and mobility exercises; focus on breathing; and being able to go about daily life more comfortably.

We work with these amazing women to help keep the area moving well, maintain or rebuild strength and, in any way that we can, ensure their quality of life is not further impacted by the procedure. Looking onwards and upwards!

Mastectomies are generally highly successful, and we aim to be returning to normal daily activities by around five to six weeks post-op in many cases. From there, we can look to re-introduce gentle exercise in the Pilates studio as well.

If you are a mastectomy candidate or have already undergone the procedure and feel you need some additional support, please get in touch.
